Gum Trim (Gingivectomy)

This involves removing a small portion of your gum tissue with a scalpel, laser or small electrode (electrosurgery). The laser and electrosurgery give very similar results. With either you get minimal bleeding and usually only minor discomfort similar to a mild burn from hot coffee or pizza.

There are several reasons for a gum trim to be done:

- When decay occurs below the gumline, it may be necessary to remove the gum tissue blocking access to the decay.

- Sometimes the gum may be 'too long' on one or several front teeth causing them to appear short. Trimming the uneven areas of gum tissue helps restore a more even appearence.

- Sometimes the gums may be swollen due to irritation from plaque and calculus which result in Gingivitis. This is very common with children and braces. If the gums remain swollen after several thorough cleanings, they may need to be 'trimmed back'.

If extensive treatment is required which requires removal of bone in addition to the gum tissue you will usually be referred to a 'gum specialist' or periodontist. They are best able to perform complicated surgical procedures.
